SHARON, PA — The Penn State Shenango Women's Basketball and Cross Country teams joined forces to make a difference in the local community by volunteering at the Mercer County Food Bank's "Ready, Set, Go Orange" event. The initiative, held on September 6-7, was part of Hunger Action Month, bringing awareness to the increasing need for food assistance as the holiday season approaches.

The event marked the food bank's first 24-hour volunteer drive, aimed at preparing essential food supplies to meet the demand during its busiest time of the year. Student-athletes from both teams assisted in packing food boxes, organizing donations, and supporting the logistical efforts of the food bank.

Head Coach Cimone Reid of the Penn State Shenango Women's Basketball team shared her enthusiasm for the event. "Our program is very grateful for the opportunity to give back to our community. Today, we packed food boxes for the Mercer County Food Bank's Ready, Set, Go Orange event. It is their first 24-hour event that helps prepare for their busiest season. September is Hunger Action Month, so it was a great time for us to volunteer and help this agency with their mission," she said.

The Penn State Shenango student-athletes not only demonstrated their teamwork on the court and field but also their commitment to supporting local organizations. By volunteering at the event, the students learned about the importance of community service and the challenges many families in the region face regarding food insecurity.

The "Ready, Set, Go Orange" initiative continues to grow each year, and with the help of volunteers like Penn State Shenango's teams, the Mercer County Food Bank is better prepared to serve those in need.
