
SHARON, Pa - Shenango Women's Basketball is off to a strong start for the 2022-2023 season. The lady lions opened their season at the Carlow University Tip-Off Tournament held at Oakland Catholic high school in Pittsburgh, PA.
The first game matched up Shenango vs. Community College of Allegheny County. Shenango came out with a dominating victory 88-23. Returning All-American Aneziah Fryer ended the game with 15 points and 7 steals. Returners Jaysina Sellers and Hailee Aguinaga had a standout performance both with a double-double. Sellers with 16 points and 16 rebounds, Aguinaga had 15 points and 22 rebounds, a team high. Although Shenango struggled at the free throw line, only going 4-16, they managed a 40.4% performance in field goals, and 29% from the 3point arc. Newcomer Kylie Krupp managed 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Audrey Reardon, another newcomer, managed 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Ciara Mason from CCAC managed 10 points and 5 rebounds, and Kassandra Holland had 5 points and 1 steal.
Shenango then faced University of Cincinnati Clermont on Saturday. UC Clermont outscored Shenango by 1 in all quarters except for the 3rd, where the Cougars spread their lead to 12. In the 77-64 loss, Fryer had 18 points and 5 assists, Sellers with 10 points and 9 rebounds, and Aguinaga with 21 points and 14 rebounds, another double-double performance. The Cougars' Tyra Murphy also managed a double-double performance with 33 points and 14 rebounds. Moore and Duncan added in 17 and 15 points of their own respectively. The Lady Lions shot 29% from the field, which wasn't enough for the Cougars 40% performance.
So. Aguinaga's performances landed her the PSUAC Conference player of the week for week 1. She currently leads the conference in rebounds/game with 18 and is 5th in points per game with 18, and second in blocks with 6.
Shenango is back in action on Tuesday, November 15th with their first conference game of the year at Penn State Dubois.
