Hughley Sets Record in Loss

The Penn State Shenango Lions Men's Basketball team continued their season with two road matchups this past week, facing formidable opponents in Point Park University, an NCAA Division II program, and Franciscan University. Despite falling short in both contests, the Lions showcased individual milestones and competitive spirit, with notable performances highlighting the team's potential.

On Thursday, the Lions faced Point Park University and were overpowered by the Pioneers' high-scoring offense, falling 118-68. Point Park's ability to shoot efficiently from the field, finishing at 52.7%, made the difference. However, Shenango's Danny Hughley III shined in the contest, setting a new program single-game record with six three-pointers on 6-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc. Hughley led all Lions scorers with 18 points while also contributing three rebounds and a steal in 27 minutes of action.

Izzy Santiago added a solid performance, scoring 12 points, including two three-pointers, while registering three steals and a rebound in his 33 minutes. Malik Davis provided energy on both ends of the court, chipping in nine points and two rebounds. Cameron Brown added five points and one assist, while Chris Williams came off the bench to contribute eight points, one rebound, and two assists. The Lions displayed depth, with Connor Hudran and Devin Alston combining for six points, three rebounds, and two assists.

Despite the loss, Shenango showed improved three-point shooting, hitting 13-of-34 (38.2%) from beyond the arc, a significant factor in keeping the game competitive during stretches. However, the team struggled on the boards, being outrebounded 74-19, which allowed Point Park to maintain control throughout the game.

On Saturday, the Lions traveled to Franciscan University for another challenging contest, falling 83-44. Shenango struggled offensively, particularly from long range, where they went 0-for-17 from three-point territory. Malik Davis led the Lions with 10 points, three rebounds, and one block. Cameron Brown contributed four points and six rebounds, showing his determination on the glass. Izzy Santiago displayed his hustle with eight rebounds, five points, and a steal in 31 minutes.

Zach Walker and Connor Hudran provided a spark off the bench, combining for eight points and four rebounds. Chris Williams added five points and a steal, while Langston Boyd contributed five points and three rebounds in 16 minutes of action. Despite a better second-half shooting effort, the Lions' overall field goal percentage remained at 30.8%, and turnovers plagued their chances, with 21 giveaways leading to easy points for the home team.

Now standing at 2-13 on the season, Penn State Shenango is continuing to develop as a program, facing a tough slate of NCAA and USCAA competition. Danny Hughley's record-setting performance against Point Park University and the consistent efforts of players like Malik Davis and Izzy Santiago demonstrate the potential within the Lions' roster. With opportunities to improve and build chemistry, the Lions are focused on growth and resilience as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
