Penn State Shenango split a doubleheader with Penn State New Kensington on Tuesday, April 22, at Eastwood Field, taking the opener 5-3 before falling 7-3 in game two. The first game saw Shenango play one of its most complete games of the season, combining timely hitting, strong pitching, and flawless defense to secure the win. After both teams traded early runs, Shenango pulled ahead with a run in the fourth and added two more in the sixth to seal the deal. Jason Malley, Nate Evans, and Remington Hart each drove in a run, with Malley, Guarnieri, Evans, and Hart all delivering doubles to spark the offense. JA Quahliero continued his strong season on the mound, improving to 3-1 with a six-inning effort in which he allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five. Will Perry entered in the seventh and retired all three batters he faced to record his first save of the season. The defense was stellar behind Shenango's pitchers, committing no errors, while New Kensington struggled in the field, committing four.
Game two started with promise for Shenango as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run single by Troy Bachman. Dominic Fornataro doubled and scored twice, and Mikey Guarnieri chipped in with an RBI single as the Lions tried to build on their momentum from game one. However, defensive miscues haunted Shenango throughout the contest, as five errors led to several unearned runs for New Kensington. Despite a solid offensive showing—collecting nine hits, including multi-hit games from Bachman, Micaletti, and Fornataro—the Lions couldn't overcome the defensive lapses. Nick Osborne took the loss, tossing six innings and allowing nine hits and four unearned runs while striking out four. Will Perry and Nate Evans combined to finish the game, with Evans tossing a clean final inning. The loss dropped Shenango to 10-18 overall and 6-10 in Penn State University Athletic Conference play, as they continue to battle for position in the standings with just a few games remaining in the regular season.
