Penn State Shenango earned a hard-fought split in its PSUAC doubleheader against Penn State Greater Allegheny on Friday afternoon at Pullman Park, bouncing back from an 8-6 loss in the opener to claim a thrilling 2-1 extra-inning win in Game 2. The victory in the nightcap marked Shenango's first conference win of the season and showed the grit and resilience of a team that continues to grow in confidence and chemistry.
In Game 1, Greater Allegheny used timely hitting and consistent run production to build an early lead, scoring in five of six innings to go up 8-2 entering the final frame. Shenango refused to go quietly, however, putting together a furious four-run rally in the seventh. Troy Bachman drove in a pair with a base hit to center, followed by freshman Logan Cypher's first career home run, a two-run shot that cleared the fence and cut the deficit to just two runs. Despite the late push, Shenango couldn't overcome the early hole, falling just short.
JA Quahliero also contributed offensively with a two-run double in the fifth inning to get Shenango on the board. The Lions worked seven walks in the contest and made the most of limited opportunities, collecting four hits but keeping pressure on the mound through disciplined at-bats. On the hill, Nick Osborne took the loss, going five innings and allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Jacob Werner pitched the final inning, surrendering three more runs as Greater Allegheny padded its lead.
The second game was a pitcher's duel from the outset, and Shenango's arms were up to the task. Nate Evans turned in a strong start, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out three. He kept the game within reach, navigating around six hits and four walks with poise. Will Perry took over in the seventh and was nearly untouchable, tossing four hitless innings and striking out three to earn his second win of the season. His steady presence on the mound allowed Shenango to stay locked in until the offense broke through.
That breakthrough came in the tenth inning. After Quahliero reached base, it was Osborne—making an impact with his bat this time—who delivered the go-ahead RBI single to give Shenango its first lead of the game. The defense held firm in the bottom half, sealing the 2-1 victory and sending the dugout into celebration.
Quahliero continued his strong day at the plate, finishing the doubleheader 3-for-8 with three RBIs, two doubles, and two runs scored. Bachman added three hits of his own across both games, while Cypher contributed a home run and a single in a key pinch-hit role in Game 2.
The split gives Shenango momentum heading deeper into conference play. After battling through early-season adversity, the team showed resilience, poise, and a hunger to compete. With strong performances on the mound and key contributions from the lineup, the Lions are poised to turn the corner as they chase a strong finish to the spring campaign.
