STATE COLLEGE, Pa - Shenango's inaugural golf season concluded on October 11th at the Penn State Blue Course with a National Championship appearance by Jr. Gianna Effinite (193).
This season was an overall success, with one player qualifying for Nationals while a few others hit an impressive personal best in strokes. "This year was an amazing opportunity for the campus and the community as a whole. To be able to coach college students in this game, and see them get better everyday was extremely rewarding," said Head Coach Tom Roskos.
The team traveled to 6 tournaments total including two local courses: Tam O'Shanter and Avalon Country Club in Sharon, PA. Jr. Gianna Effinite saw some success as she won the title for the Women's division at the annual Penn State White Course Invitational (102). She also won second at our first annual Shenango Invitational (Tam O'Shanter, 84), just 2 strokes behind the winner from Seton Hill University (NCAA Division II).
Fr. Karson Cropp scored his personal best at the Penn State Blue Course Invitational with 98. Jr. Bailey Lopuchovksy averaged 120 on the season while Jr. Alex Davis averaged 108. Sr. Halaina Bowers never played competitve golf prior to this year, and shaved off 25 strokes between her first and second invitationals this year. Fr. Clayton Smith averaged in the low-mid 100's.
"I am so impressed with this season. To end our first year with one at National Championships is more than I could have asked for," said Athletic Director Amanda Howett. "I can't wait to continue this success into next year, as I know Bob (Collins) and Tom (Roskos) will continue to grow our current talent and bring in new talent as well."
